Egyptian Discoveries

Egyptians, it seems, had it made all those thousands of years ago. The Nile River was running free, their sewers were functional, and their jumbo air conditioning units worked. In other words, they had one of the greatest ancient civilizations ever.

In what is being billed as a discovery that will redefine our understanding of ancient Egypt, the Italian Archaeological Mission recently unearthed a rare ritual "house of the dead" complete with nearly 20 stone coffins and sarcophagi.

The discovery turned up three years of heavy use in two separate burial grounds, proving the house of the dead as a "closed space" reserved for those "outside the reach of the present day," writes LiveScience.

Archaeology in the Middle East

  • In January, not a single snowflake fell on the archaeological excavation of the Israeli city of Ahiara.

While the site had been painstakingly excavated for almost a century, an unexpected dry spell in the Middle East left archaeologists in Ahiara, population 100, with a free-for-all, uncovering new information about what may be the world's earliest known farming community.
