Fact: Merlin was an enchanter who often used magic to perform feats.
Merlin is a popular figure in Arthurian legend, but what do we know about him? Merlin is described as Merlinus Caledonensis, “the Welsh sorcerer.” He had magical powers to help the young King Arthur grow up and become king, and he also became one of Arthur’s trusted advisors.
Nobody knows if he ever existed, but many people believe he did. His name was likely Myrddin Emrys or Morvidus, later shortened to Merlin if he did live. The Welsh word for this type of magician is “enchanter,” so Merlin may have been an enchanter rather than a wizard.
