The Struggle Against Indifference
By Tim Cook, Published 2006.
In one of the most extraordinary descriptions of a Canadian national problem, Tim Cook states that "The indifference of a majority of the population toward the conduct of the armed forces, is endemic to the culture of Canada, and leaves our soldiers adrift in a sea of indifference."
Much of that indifference results from the general public being uninformed about the history of the Canadian military and Canada's role in world affairs. However, ignorance is not the problem; Canada's informed, critical public is not mainly available.

In 2003, Canadian historian Simon Schama told me his own story of national forgetfulness. In 1979 he was honoured with an Order of Canada, Canada's highest civilian award.
"In my office is a medal from the Canadian Olympic Association, which is inscribed "The first-ever Olympic bronze medal awarded to Canada."
