Battle of Vimy Ridge

Perhaps the least significant battle in the history of the Canadian Corps, the only large war Canadians know about, is the most famous. The CanadiaCorps' offensives intended to take Vimy Ridge from German control and get the French to send an invasion force to liberate their country.

  • It failed utterly.

It also failed almost exclusively because the British had thought they knew everything when it came to artillery. John Cabot described the artillery as being, in essence, "a big cannon with a big hole in it." It was essential to improve that.

It did, and not just in terms of more excellent calibre. As it turned out, the Western Front was a battlefield full of sunken valleys and ridges or rubble mounds that were unlikely to get more useful.
