The world has seen a lot of wars in its history. Some lasted for years, some for days. Some were bloody; some were surgical. Some were one-time affairs, while others were protracted affairs.

Some were fought by armies, while others were fought by militias, bandits, pirates, and even guerillas. Some were against a single enemy, while others were against several enemies at once.

And some were against no particular adversary and were instead waged for conquest, plunder, or domination of a specific people. Some were ruthless and short, while others ran for years.

And still, others were so far in the past that few people still remember them. To understand the history of war, it is helpful to look at the historical context and the unique features of each battle.
